Milwaukee Brewers Overlook Julio Teheran’s Past Struggles for Remarkable Comeback
The Milwaukee Brewers looked past Julio Teheran’s 5.62 ERA at Triple-A El Paso, seeing his potential. Now, Teheran is one of baseball’s best comeback stories. Returning to the majors after over two years, the 32-year-old has posted a 1.78 ERA in five starts with Milwaukee, including a one-hit game against the Pirates. His WHIP dropped from 1.68 at El Paso to 0.82 with the Brewers.
Teheran’s confidence in his pitches and command played a key role in his return. Brewers pitching coach Chris Hook highlighted the importance of TrackMan technology and understanding Teheran’s strengths. Teheran quickly adapted, signing with Milwaukee on May 25 and delivering strong performances immediately.
Previously struggling with a 10.05 ERA with the Angels in 2020 and shoulder injuries in 2021, Teheran found success again after signing a Minor League deal with the Padres. He added a cutter to his arsenal and improved his sinker usage.
With Milwaukee needing starting pitching, Teheran chose free agency and joined the Brewers. His confidence and ability to use all his pitches, especially the newly added cutter, have been crucial. Now, even with other pitchers returning from injury, Teheran has secured his spot in the Brewers’ rotation.
