Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi has acknowledged the challenges in strategizing against Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM), whom they will host in a Premier Soccer League (PSL) match on Wednesday.
TTM has a newly-assembled team after acquiring their top-flight league status from Bidvest Wits. Following a draw with TS Galaxy in their opening league match, Tshakhuma is set to face Sundowns, who are confident after a 3-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in their first league game.
Mngqithi is cautious about reading too much into their win against Chiefs, noting the limited information available about Joel Masutha’s TTM squad.
“It’s very difficult [to plan against Tshakhuma] because over the last two matches they have played two different line-ups,” Mngqithi told the Sundowns media team. He explained that Tshakhuma is still integrating new players, making it hard to discern consistent patterns in their play.
TTM’s first two games saw them narrowly lose 3-2 to SuperSport United in the MTN8 quarter-finals and draw with TS Galaxy. The varied line-ups in these matches have complicated Sundowns’ ability to analyze their opponents, making TTM unpredictable and potentially dangerous.
“Such teams are very dangerous because you do not know exactly who you will face,” said Mngqithi. He highlighted players like Justin Shonga, Mogakolodi Ngele, and Lerato Lamola, who featured in different combinations in TTM’s recent matches.
Mngqithi pointed out TTM’s strength in set-pieces, particularly mentioning players like Alfred Ndengane, Lehlohonolo Nonyane, and Ngele, who are known for their prowess. He emphasized the importance of defending intelligently and avoiding giving away free kicks near the box due to the threat posed by Shonga and Ngele.
To prepare, Sundowns are focusing on the individual profiles of TTM players since the team lacks a clear tactical approach. Mngqithi expressed confidence in their analysis and preparations, despite the uncertainty surrounding their opponents.
